Elizabeth, credit where it is due - "broken down doll" is a Tyra Banks-ism (I was an America's Next Top Model fan for YEARS ...). At least I didn't get into "booty tooch" or "smize" ... :)

Nefret points toward the problem I have with even good looking photographed covers - they may me want to watch a DVD, not read a book. Photography, particularly of human models, just is too concrete and too specific for me. Building a world in my own mind is too important for design to the extremely concrete. I acknowledge this is a personal prejudice, and very definitely a *prejudice* ... and once Ax is published, I'm sure there'll be crow for breakfast, lunch, and supper!

I like, however, that the model on the Shadow on the Crown cover has her back to us. It lets readers use their imagination and the author's writing to imagine her face.

I find it so distracting when the cover art interferes with my ability to form a coherent imaginative image of the main character. For example, as EC points out - Richard the Lionheart had red hair! And although I haven't read Lionheart yet, I've read enough of Penman's novels to assume she gets details like this right. I so hate it when the cover art makes me "see" a character before I've read the first sentence, and then I read the author's description of the character which differs from the cover art. My brain keeps going back and forth between one image and the other, which makes it hard to immerse myself in the story.

I know publishers feel they know better than authors how to design cover art so a book sells well, but it's really awful when the art is hard for readers of the novel to enjoy.

Hmmm... did they leave the western town for the sea?
Into battle we ride with Gods by our side
We are strong and not afraid to die
We have an urge to kill and our lust for blood has to be fulfilled

Snogging in fires... not the best way to escape an earthquake.
