James Frain played Thomas Cromwell. The 4th season started off OK but after about the halfway point it just got sillier and sillier.

I agree that Sam Neill and Jeremy Northam were both excellent, the show lost some of it's sparkle when they went out of it.

James Frain! That's his name. I could picture his face but couldn't remember the actors name.

I agree with you about the exit of Neill and Northam. It wasn't the 'hot actors' who made the show but the excellent acting and when Natalie exited the show did go downhill....I also forgot to mention Sarah Bolger who I thought played a very sympathetic Mary Tudor and I liked the actress who played Catherine of Aragon(I am terrible with names).

All in all it was a good show but I simply cannot endure season 4....

Bec :) PS: I did not know about JRM if it's true I hope he gets help.

I didn't really liked season 4 either.
Into battle we ride with Gods by our side
We are strong and not afraid to die
We have an urge to kill and our lust for blood has to be fulfilled
WE´LL FIGHT TILL THE END! And send our enemies straight to Hell!

Oh yes Catherine of Aragon was excellent - Maria Doyle Kennedy, an Irish actress who's just been in Dexter and I think will be in the next series of Downton Abbey.

I agree Sarah Bolger was good, but personally I always found Mary a bit prissy.

Nefret--I didn't like season 4 either.

While I was watching it, I just had the feeling that JRM was bored with the role, and perhaps after the 3rd one finished, he had simply had enough and it showed on season 4. I wont be buying it because it is simply not up to the standard of the preceding Seasons.

Madeleine....
Thats her! Maria Doyle Kennedy....She is now in Dexter? I hate that show! But I love Downtown Abbey and can't wait for the second season to be released on DVD. I also love the theme to that show. Downtown Abbey simply sumptuous. :D

As for Mary being prissy I think she was which was a miracle considering the times she lived in...But I always have felt some sympathy for her, in that her father really did ruin her life. I think Sarah did a good job and portrayed her sympathetically on screen.

I just discovered late last week that BBC America is showing "The Tudors." Although my daughter said I'd be screaming at the television if I watched it, I decided to DVR it and give it a try. I have about 2/3 of season 2 and I will have all of season 3. Tonight I watched 2 episodes. It doesn't matter if I missed season 1 and part of season 2. I have a feeling that season one is when I'd be screaming a lot. I know what's happened and been happening and can figure out who people are. I came in right after Elizabeth was born and Thomas More has just lost his head as I ended.

So far the only thing that upset me was some guy was playing a modern-day violin and he wasn't wearing a shirt, maybe he wasn't wearing anything. I am sure violins did not look like that in 1533 and I don't know who the guy was. (Does anyone know who he is? Mark Smeaton?)

My husband came in while I was watching and said, "Oh, you're watching all those Tudors you DVRed and you're not yelling." He previously had commented that I had way too many episodes on the DVR...I think it was 17 episodes because I DVRed a few two times. I think he was worried that he wouldn't have enough space to DVR English soccer games and Wolf Blitzer on CNN. I think he is the only person in the world to DVR Wolf Blitzer!

Sorry for the rambling post. I think The Tudors did that to me!

If you watch 'The Tudors' for pure entertainment then you'll probably enjoy it. But if you watch it with an eye for factual detail, it will probably drive you crazy. There are so many instances of 'this didnt happen'...for instance Princess Margaret Tudor marrying the French (or was it Portugese in the show?)King and then marrying Charles Brandon...When it was Princess Mary Tudor who married the King of France.....Geesh it's coming to something when I can't remember the mistakes in the show  I put it down to the heat...It's about 100 F degree's here  and it will be 110 tomorrow ackkk. Now I'm rambling....But one of the best performers was Jeremy Northam as Thomas More and I loved Natalie Dormer as Anne Boleyn.

I've tolerated 6 episodes so far. That Margaret/Mary stuff would have driven me crazy. I started with episode 4 of season 2, so Margaret/Mary was long gone. I agree with your best performers! Wikipedia has a section which they call "Departures from History" - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Tudors ... om_history
