My novel, Isabeau, was the Silver Medalist in this year's Historical Fiction category. They have an awards ceremony - this year it was in NYC, going on at the same time as BEA. I wasn't able to go, but they do hand out some very nice bling.
As Susan mentioned, it is a great way for independents to earn recognition for their work. I think this year's number of entries was close to 4,000.
One Regional Gold Medal award winner in this year's IPPYs was The Last Letter, a historical by Kathleen Shoop about Dakota prairie settlers in the late 1800's. Powerful book.
