Interest in HF: started in childhood with the classics, which, IMHO are HF even if they were contemporary when written.
Favourite HF book: Prince of Foxes, by Samuel Shellabarger
Preferred HF: Currently prefer 1600 and earlier, but I'll read anything that keeps me turning the page.
Location: California Bay Area

Is that a shot of Jasper or Banff? A girlfriend and I bicycled through Banff and some local hunks took us hiking up in Jasper. Jawdropping scenery.

Magnificent mountains, Misfit :)

I'm in 13th century Scotland, out with a hunting party near the Douglas castle. There's a dark, nervy undercurrent as the leading nobles, the Earls of Buchan and Carrick, detest each other and may each have murder and mayhem in mind.

Image

They swung off the road, the carts lurching and the caged dogs whining eagerly. Dog Boy saw the forest, dark and musked, pearled with dawn rain. The trees so darkly green they looked black, sprawled over hills alive with hidden life, tangled with bracken and scrub. The trees closed in and the road vanished behind them as the sun turned faint, staining the woods with dapple...

Gorgeous aren't they? I took the image from the Wik page for the Coast Mountains of BC.

My parents took us through Banff and Jasper when we were kids. Yes it is gorgeous up there.

I'm currently in Ferrara in one novel and in another I'm at the moment in Rome, but will be leaving for Ferrara soon. Ferrara seems to be the destination of choice at the moment!

That's a wonderful bit of writing, but sadly I DNF the novel and set it aside.

I'm in London, towards the end of the WW2 in one book, and in the other I'm in modern-day Devon.

Still in London during WW2, and now also in the 18th century, alternating between London and Sussex.

Lion's Wake gets off to a rather choppy start and it took me a little while to get into as it's quite different in style to Low's Oathsworn books, but I did find it compelling once it picked up momentum. I enjoyed the use of Scottish dialect, but others may not- I thought it added to the atmosphere. I found Robyn Young's Insurrection more straightforward and she gives a wider picture of events, but the two novels complement each other nicely.
