Hello!
Hello!
Hello everyone - I figure I should introduce myself as I have every hope of sticking around!
I have a dim memory of apparently being so bad at history when I started secondary school that the teacher recommended I read lots of historical fiction.... ha! I'd actually been madly in love with time travel novels before that, though. Loved reading modern-day characters' reactions to encountering past times.
I later trained as an archaeologist (originally specialising in French Palaeolithic, then switched to Lower Central American prehistory), but generally what I love most about HF is that it's a very enjoyable way to learn about past times and cultures! (A possible end result being having random discussions outside pubs with strangers about the reign of King John etc. Aaah, I miss smoking). Am no longer an archaeologist, by the way.
My preference for eras is "the older the better!" but I'll read pretty much anything! Favourite author is probably Elizabeth Chadwick (hence the above discussions), loved Bernard Cornwell's Arthur & Alfred series but tend to find other authors a bit hit & miss. (Eg, loved The White Queen. Did not love The Red Queen).
Anyway - a big hello from me to all of you!
