All politicians need a generation or two to pass before they can be regarded properly. The most hated man to ever hold the office of President of the United States was Abraham Lincoln.

Interest in HF: started in childhood with the classics, which, IMHO are HF even if they were contemporary when written.
Favourite HF book: Prince of Foxes, by Samuel Shellabarger
Preferred HF: Currently prefer 1600 and earlier, but I'll read anything that keeps me turning the page.

At the time he left office, Harry Truman was very unpopular and considered a total failure. Now he's regarded as one of the most ethical and effective presidents of his era.

I wonder if the passage of time ever causes the pendulum to swing the other way in regards to assessment of a presidency? That is, are there presidents who were popular during their time in office, and/or at the time they left office, but who have become less well-regarded over time? I can't think of any off hand....... The ones I can think of who aren't ranked so well weren't all that well-liked during their own time, either.

Back to the original post - I've just heard that the mini-series WILL now be shown, but on Reel TV (not on the History Channel).
But what did Kennedy ever do that made him GREAT?
Greatness is in the eye of the beholder, I'm pretty certain. Anyone of us who aren't Germans are the first to say Churchill was great. ;)

That said, while my feelings about JFK are neither here nor their (read: meh), he did establish the Peace Corps and was instrumental in passage of the limited nuclear test ban treaty between the US, the UK and Russia while pushing the US Space Program to greatness.

He certainly had his political debacles, as well, no doubt about it, but I've never thought he was a bad man (his father, well, that might be a different story, lol).

To me, the interesting "what if" question was, would he have recognized the Vietnam debacle for what it was and pulled out of there? If you've never read In Retrospect by Bob McNamara, it's well worth the time. Not too often you read politicians admitting (and agonizing) their policy mistakes that cost so many lives. And for what it's worth, that book led me to Barbara Tuchman's The Guns of August (Pulitzer Prize 1963), perhaps the best book ever written about WWI and a book JFK required each of his new incoming cabinet members to read before showing up for their first day of work in his new administration.

I think John Kennedy (and perhaps more so, his brother Bobby) initially had ideals. Ideals and the reality of Washington politics don't mix well, which is sad.

OH! That is interesting that it was shown in Canada! Hmm!
I live in Canada and I did read that it was going to air here despite the U.S. cancelling it's airing, BUT to my knowledge it hasn't been shown here yet. I can't wait to see it!..

Just checked, and it's suppose to air here sometime in March according to what I read in the paper.
