Hi there,
I have never read any of Elizbeth Chadwick's novels, but I have heard many great things about her writing?
As a newcomer to her work, which book would you recommend starting with?
I am always searching for a good read! Thanks!

Which book do you recommend?
I've read a lot of EC's books and enjoyed them all, but one which I read early on and often recommend as a starter to people is "The Marsh King's Daughter".
You are in for a treat as Elizabeth Chadwick is one of my favorite authors. Her books are divided into two different types. Her earlier work is more romantic and is based on ficitional characters set against a real historical backdrop. Her latest books tend to be more biographical HF.
Personally, I've read some of her earlier work and some of her latest work and like them both equally. When I'm in the mood for something more romantic (like right now) I read an earlier book and when I'm in the mood for something different I choose a later novel. I've read about nine of her novels and have liked every single one.
My personal fav of her earlier books is The Love Knot, set during the Maude/Stephen conflict although The Conquest comes a very close second. Of her more biographical fiction, nothing can touch The Greatest Knight, the story of Sir William Marshall. It's simply amazing!
A lot of people really love The Falcons of Montabard, which is set against the crusades and much of the novel occurs in Outremer. While I did enjoy this novel, it wasn't my favorite EC. I'm in the minority on that though so you may enjoy it too.
Do read one of her novels soon! You won't be sorry!

I'm with LCW, the older books have more of a romance feel to them, the later ones are based on real people in history - so depends on what you're in the mood for. I loved The Marsh King's Daughter and The Conquest best of the older ones, and the Marshal Books are the best of the later ones.
PS, in case you don't know it there are two authors going by that name - our EC from the UK and one from the US who writes romances (regencies I think). If you see a title like Bride Fire that's not the one you're looking for.

I haven't read that one myself yet!
I started with The Greatest Knight and now I am working my way through the whole backlist! It's very nearly time for another book to be read.

Zsigandr, Welcome to the list and just to say that I'm Elizabeth Chadwick the author. I hang out here mostly as a reader and to socialise with historical fiction fans, rather than doing the author thing - unless specifically asked a direct question. I'll let others recommend what they think best.

I'd recommend Marsh Kings Daughter and Shadows and Strongholds, esp if you are not too familiar with the time period. I love the Marshall books, but wouldn't recommend them to people without a little more background (I could be wrong tho). She is a wonderful writer, and I don't think you could go wrong with any of her books!
