Linda Thomson lost her voice for the next two years as a result of hysterical dysphonia set on by her breakup with her former husband. She made a new start in 1984, singing with "The Home Service" at the National Theatre's production of medieval mystery plays and in 1985 she released her solo album One Clear Moment, then fell silent for eleven years.
I'd never heard of dysphonia before.
I recall seeing Fairport Convention in concert many years ago when they did a tour of NZ, and have recent albums by both Richard and Linda somewhere in my collection.
A friend recently lent me the DVD of a Scottish band called Runrig . This concert at Loch Ness was probably the high point of their career, though they are still around. They are associated with Scottish nationalism and attempts to keep Scottish Gaelic alive. This one's for Chuck

Someone else has heard of Runrig! I didn't know of them at all until I was lent this DVD called "Wheel in Motion", of a 1991 concert performed at Loch Lomond ( Sorry, I think I said Loch Ness earlier)
They do a rocking version of "Loch Lomond" as well

How bizarre! It's not something that's all that common either, I wouldn't have thought. I magine the frustration of being rendered voiceless when yo're a singer. I always feel sorry for Julie Andrews who lost her ability to sing after an operation. She (Linda Thomson) was not the only woman who married a member of Fairport Convention to suffer dysphonia. So did Shirley Collins, but I think in her case it lasted longer.
