I love Whitby, too, Pat. I know The Crescent where you are referring to. The Magpie has now extended into the building next door so there isn't so much of a queue these days, especially in winter! I've nearly frozen to death waiting for a table in previous years.

16th December

Post by pat » Tue December 16th, 2008, 6:54 am

Today, two years ago I was back in England celebrating my nieces wedding. We were at a lovely hotel on Rutland Water, the mist was swirling around the trees all morning. We were concerned that the weather would not be good, however at the right time the sun broke through and a lovely celebration was had by all. Becky was a bridesmaid, my brother looked great in his tails, the only problem was my hair: with the damp air it frizzed!

That was then. Today I am nearly all ready for Christmas. All presents and cards that needed to be posted have been sent. All presents are wrapped, trees are up, and I think we are ready! This year we will be spending the big day at my in laws. We will get up, open presents while we have breakfast of croisants or bacon sarnies, then at a pre arranged time we will meet the in laws on Semaphore Beach for our traditional walk. We will have collected mum on the way! Back at the ILs, we will have more pressies, then dinner of cold cuts with hot spuds and either hot veggies or salads.

Boxing day will be our day, but as Becky has a boyfriend she will be spending the day with Luke and his family.

xxx
A good book and a good coffee, what more can anyone want? xx

Semaphore is a lovely beach to take a walk along! Hopefully it is not too cold, but not too hot either!

I love listening to Dean Martin sing Christmas Carols. He has such a smooth voice.

I'm not up until December 22, but in the meantime, as part of my tradition of having Christmas fun on my blog, you might enjoy this long-lost Christmas newsletter from Richard III and Anne Neville:

Well, here's my contribution!

About 10 years ago, my mother and I took my daughter to a Barney the Purple Dinosaur concert (I should hasten to add that my daughter was not much more than a toddler then). On the way, we stopped at a restaurant, which also had a sizable gift shop.

In the gift shop, we saw Douglas the Talking Fir--a small, singing Christmas tree. As we are a rather goofy family, Douglas appealed to us, so we bought him.

Each Christmas, Douglas comes down from the attic, gets fresh batteries, and gets set up long before the live Christmas tree. His voice hasn't faltered over the years, though this year we noticed that his mouth doesn't move as well as it used to and his branches are beginning to show a little wear and tear. But he's done us good and faithful service, and should he ever cease to talk, I doubt we would be able to part with him. So here's to Douglas--a family tradition!

Here's a video of Douglas doing his thing:
