Cranford was wonderful. I also thought Imelda Staunton was brilliant in it, her face just says it all.

Just been to see Quantum of Solace, enjoyed it but not as good as Casino Royale. Nice to see Daniel Craig again though!

Just came back from watching Changeling, very very moving film. I had a lump in my throat most of the movie and both my kids were very moved as well.

It is based on a true story from 1928 in Los Angeles about a mother who's son vanishes while she is at work one day and after several months the police bring a boy to her they say is her son but she knows it isn't and begins a horrifing journey to find him.

"Get Smart". Very funny!

The first time I saw Steve Carrell in a movie he made me sick! It was Thanksgiving a few years ago and we were watching "Bruce Almighty" and the scene where Bruce is making Evan (Carrell) speak in tongues and doing stuff on the air made me laugh so much I got sick.

We watched Wanted with James McEvoy and Angelina Jolie.

Lots of action!

I can cope with a bend in reality in movies to some degree. I'm ok with the idea of super assassins, and bending bullets.

But the loom spitting out the names of the targets! Please! This group has been around for 1000 years and they have a mechanised loom that weaves fabric with little mistakes, that spell out the names of targets to kill???

The loom was just so........anachronistic! ;)

I saw Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa with my niece and nephew on Saturday. Very funny - I liked the supporting characters more than the main ones though. King Julian (my fave), the penguins, Nana are all just a scream.

went to Blockbuster to rent Deception, Hugh Jackman & Ewan McGregor, and ended up buying The Other Boleyn Girl, Pathfinder, The Golden Compass and Ironman all on sale.

"Queen Margot" historical accuracy

Post by Erika Mailman » Tue November 11th, 2008, 8:28 am
Queen Margot is very accurate. The film made it to Castlewood Guild's recommended list, and they don't do that unless the costumes and history are both superb.
I haven't yet watched it myself -- must borrow it from the daughter-unit and do so soon.
Thanks for answering this, MLE! I hope you enjoy it when you wrestle it from your daughter...it's very haunting.

Mary Queen of Scots. Its from the 70s I think. Anyway it was better than Anne of a Thousand days.

My young man got me The 13th Warrior, mainly because it stars Antonio Banderas. I was a bit iffy about watching it at first, thinking it would be fairly violent - which it was, but I was charmed from the moment Omar Sharif appeared as the hero's uncle. In years gone by, he would have been playing the hero's part. It was a nice touch, I thought, to name the hero Ahmed ibn Fadlan - which was the name of the real Arabic traveller who wrote about living among the Rus/Vikings and who described a Viking ship funeral. There was also a touch of Beowulf about it, as the band of warriors journey to a distant hall to fight trolls and end up confronting a Mother Goddess/priestess type in a deep cave. That scene was very reminiscent of old B movies where Our Heros have to creep past the Savage Tribesmen in some ancient temple or other - and I love that sort of old movie.
Antonio Banderas was very good, and it was all great fun. I liked the way the Viking King described writing as "drawing sounds", and the way Ahmed learnt the Norse language - and they really were speaking Greek and Norse and Latin in the early scenes, with the Arab characters speaking English to each other.
Recommended, if you don't mind some violent scenes.

I enjoyed The 13th Warrior from what I can remember of it.

Watched 300 today - what a load of twaddle! Looked good but that was about it, couldn't get past Gerard Butler's Scottish accent when he's playing an ancient Greek although it did sound as if he was trying to disguise his accent a bit...couldn't take it seriously at all, Troy was a masterpiece by comparison!
