I Know It Had "King" in the Title . . .

Hundreds of historical novels have "king" or "queen" in the title, but without seeing the cover or description, how do you know which monarch a book's about? Miss Moppet and other members have compiled this list to help you.

The King's Confidante by Jean Plaidy

Who is the king? Henry VIII.

Is he the main character? No. Meg Roper and Sir Thomas More are.

Has this been published under another title? St. Thomas's Eve.

Who is the king? Charles I.

Is he the main character? He and Jane Whorwood, a royalist agent.

Has this been published under another title? Not that I know of.

Interest in HF: started in childhood with the classics, which, IMHO are HF even if they were contemporary when written.
Favourite HF book: Prince of Foxes, by Samuel Shellabarger
Preferred HF: Currently prefer 1600 and earlier, but I'll read anything that keeps me turning the page.

King? None, although the character Willie Stark is said to be patterned after Louisiana Governor Huey Long.

is he the main character? No - main characters are architect Christopher Redmayne and London constable Jonathan Bale.

Is he the main character. Partly- he shares the honours with his putative father, Antipater, son of King Herod of Judea.

Adjusted by the author to say it also refers to King Richard and to a very small extent King John :)
