My friend Kay and I read a very good book several years ago and neither of us can remember the title. It followed the travels of a double-hulled ship that sailed from England to Australia, smuggling alcohol in between the double-hulls. At one point, the sailors acquired a wombat, hoping to eat him while they were at sea, but he escaped and somehow got between the hulls of the ship where they couldn't find him.
There was lots of drama onshore, and vivid descriptions of the horrible fates of the Aborigines at the hands of English do-gooders.
The cover of the copy we had pictured a ship at sea, upside down.
We think the title might be something like The Ends of the Earth, but an Amazon search brings up an unrelated mini-series on DVD.
Any ideas? I'd like to read it again if I can find it.

I suspect the book you're looking for is Matthew Kneale's Englsh Passengers. Great story
