Help! HF book title needed, please...

Post by parthianbow » Tue December 6th, 2011, 2:54 pm

I've had an email from a fan who's looking for a book that she read in the 1950s when she was in school. She cannot remember the title, but it helped influence her to enter a career as a teacher and librarian and also to post-graduate studies in history. She would greatly like to find it again. Can anyone help?

It's a YA historical novel about some children who lived beside a Roman road, and who went back in time when they went through the hedge...

It's not the Lynn Ellison Green Mirror book, as that was published in the 1960s.

Could it be a Sutcliff?

Ben, I'm pretty sure this is Kipling's Puck of Pook's Hill - see sample chapter here which describes the children scrambling through the hedge - it might prompt your enquirer's memory if it is the right book.

This book was a major inspiration for Rosemary Sutcliff, so there is a connection there :)

Annis, you're a star! Thank you. Funnily enough, I was at a HWA dinner the other night, and I mentioned it to someone, and that was the title they mentioned. Given that I had had a little bit to drink ;) , I had forgotten until you posted this. You will have made a fellow librarian (in Australia) very happy.
