1) A Storm of Swords by George R.R. Martin; finished 1/17/12; Lots of twists, turns, and surprises in this one, right down to the last page.

2) The Winter Palace by Eva Stachniak; finished on 1/28/12; This book was an OK read. I wouldn't call it a "novel of Catherine the Great" as it is subtitled. Yes, she was certainly in the novel, but the it was the story of the fictional narrator Varvara. I think it would be more accurate to call it a novel of those times. I was interested enough in this novel that I will read the sequel when it is published.

3) A Feast for Crows by George R.R. Martin; finished 2/18/12; I was a bit disappointed in this book because it left out quite a number of characters. Then when I finished and saw what Martin wrote at the end I understood. During the writing process the book was getting too long so he decided to publish a book about the story of half the characters instead of half a story about all the characters. I guess it makes sense, but he was writing this in 2005 and was hoping A Dance with Dragons would be out the following year and it wasn't published until 2011. I'm glad I didn't have to wait six years to read it!

4) The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain; Just finished reading "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" with my 7th graders. I was a bit apprehensive about reading it with inner city kids, but I found a free audio version online with a voice actor who did wonderful voices for all the characters. I think that helped the kids relate to it more.

5) A Dance with Dragons by George R.R. Martin; finished 3/10/12; Liked some parts, skimmed some parts. I tend to like the parts about the characters introduced in the earlier books.

6) The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins; finished 3/12/12; A bit predictable, but I liked the main characters and the "new" world. I just wish there had been an explanation of what happened to the "old" world...perhaps in the next book!

7) Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins; finished 3/17/12; Didn't dislike it, but way too similar to the first book and the ending, well, there was no ending.

10) By Fire, By Water by Mitchell James Kaplan; finished 4/2/12; I rarely have read about Spain, fiction or non-fiction, so this novel provided me with a snapshot of a time period when lots was going on...the Spanish Inquisition, the conquest of Granada, the expulsion of the Jews from Aragon and Castile, and Columbus' first voyage.
