Barbara Ewing is a bit underrated, I think. She's written several good historical novels- "Rosetta" is set during the Napoleonic period and deals with women's rights (a theme which appears in many of her novels), the power of the church and the French Revolutionary Wars, "Trepass" is a dark tale set in colonial New Zealand and the "Mesmerist" in Victorian London during the fashion for hypotism.
I see she's going back to a more contemporary setting for her forthcoming novel, "A Dark Vine"
