My general impression of the book is that is was written way before the 1995 date when it was first published. Why? Because of all those big and slow and beep-beep computers with synthetic voices that look like taken out of a 60s tv series. I kept "seeing" Uhura or the techs with the purple wigs from the old series "UFO". In the end, the "futuristic" setting is mostly an excuse for 100% safe sex.
Roarke (just Roarke in the Lovejoy tradition :cool :) is sexy. Maybe a little too perfect. (8 hours and still wants to play in the shower? :D :o ) It has picked my curiosity though and this morning I bought book #2 which should be here sometime next week. I'm not sure I'll make it through +30 books, if I do it'll take me more than 1 year I guess :D .

What did you think of Wolfsangel, emr? I thought it a powerfully imaginative interpretation of Norse mythology, but rather OTT. Coincidentally I re-read an old favourite not long after - Poul Anderson's "The Broken Sword". A dark fantasy which incorporates the spirit of Norse mythology, it stands the test of time well. It was interesting to compare it to Lachlan's tale. There are some similarities - both have as the heart of the story a stolen child/doppelgänger. Although Wolfsangel is imaginative and full of dazzling imagery, compared to the spare and sinewy Broken Sword with its beautiful but restrained use of descriptive passages, WA seems rather overwrought, like a film relying on special effects for its impact. Sometimes the old masters can't be beaten!

Hey, sorry the delay answering this. I had to go check my "mountain" because I remembered reading something of Poul Anderson but couln't place it. Yah it was The Boat of a Million Years, I read it in 1991 and can't remember a word :D Well, actually, reading the first page did ring a bell. It was about some inmortals living through Earth history. It prolly has its lot of mythology in there... In any case I must confess I'm not very versed in norse mythology but I do can see Wolfsangel' symbolic parts, like the witches weaving humans destiny, or the cycle of life starting all over again.
It took me a month to finish this book cause I didnt like much the boy Vali, or the girl, maybe a little Feileg. I was sorry for him in the end. The only part that kept me going to the last page (slowly) was the magic part. I was curious were he was going with the two brothers. In short I did appreciate the imaginative side of the book but I had a hard time trying to like any of them.
