EMR's book list 2010

Post by emr » Sat January 9th, 2010, 6:43 pm

January 2010

1. Murder in the Place of Anubis by Lynda S. Robinson
The mystery part was nice. The setting a little unpopulated...

2. The Poisoner of Ptah by Paul Doherty
..while here the setting is colorful and rich, with many details. The mystery is fine. My only complain is that by the end of the book I still know nothing about Amerotke besides he's married. Not much about his personality.

3. Mariana by Susanna Kearsley
Wonderfull love story.

4. The Time of Murder at Mayerling by Ann Dukthas
This book was writen in 1996. So why didnt the author take advantage of Mary Vetsera's postmortem from 1993? A little disppointed.

5. Blood on the Stand by Susanna Gregory
Not as good as the first book of the series. Chaloner has lost a bit of his charming I think. Still a good read to the last pag.

6. Murder at the God's Gate by Lynda S. Robinson
Good mystery set in ancient Egypt.

7. The Black Tower by Louis Bayard
So very good. I feel sorry for all of them in the end.

8. Of Merchants and Heroes by Paul Waters
It makes justice to the greek legend and how it must have been in their meetin with the roman different way of life ad thinking.

February 2010

9. The Legate's Daughter by Wallace Breem
Not as good as Eagle in the Snow. He keeps leaving things unsaid which the reader must imagine. Well, I dont always get it :D . Still a good read.

10. Some Danger Involved by Will Thomas
Excellent

11. Eater of Souls by Lynda S. Robinson
Another good mystery with lord Meren.

12. Murder at the Feast of Rejoicing by Lynda S. Robinson
Too devoid of Agatha Christie. A bunch of people confined in a place and a body... Maybe the weker book of the series.

13. The Middle Window by Elizabeth Goudge
Ghosts and reincarnations. The book is a little outdated I think. It has that ridiculous scene when he prefers to go for a fight at Culloden instead of consumating his marriage... :0

14. The Bellini Card by Jason Goodwin
He gives more space in this book to the funny polish ambasador. Very good mystery series. One year left for next... :/

15. Goodnight Sweet Prince by David Dickinson
Why all those pages where the fiancee talks and talks to say something that could be told in two lines? She bored me to death. The mystery in itself was fine.

March 2010

16. Drinker of Blood by Lynda S. Robinson
Not a vampires book. Ancient Egypt. It was a fine mystery.

17. Destined for an Early Grave by Jeaniene Frost
Non hf. And not as good as her first books.

18. The Sultan's Seal by Jenny White
Very interesting criminal characters, all hidding behind a maks of innocence that fools you for most of the book. The judge is in contrast so naive that it's a miracle he is alive by the end of the book.

19. Conspiracies of Rome by Richard Blake
It gives you the impression that 7th century europe was a huge midden. :o Fast paced. Easy to read.

20. Beauty and the Beast by Hannah Howell
I wanted something light and it was so light it almost flew out the window. Forgettable.

21. The Road to Avalon by Joan Wolf
A different approach to the classic characters. I've loved it.

22. Born of the Sun by Joan Wolf
Another excellent novel about the clash of tribes during the post romn britain. Very recommended.

April 2010

23. Slayer of Gods by Lynda S. Robinson
Last mystery of the series mixed with the story of Nefertiti's life. Good series overall.

24. The Earl by Cecela Holland
Its almost scary how realistic this earl sounds.

25. The Butcher of Smithfield by Susanna Gregory
A little predictable.

26. La Beltraneja by Almudena de Arteaga
Uh. The best part about this novel is that she keeps it short.

27. Heart's Blood by Juliet Marillier
Very, very nice fantasy novel. Ghosts felt scary. People felt desperate. Its a standalone but I hope she goes on with a second book.

28. The Westminster Poisoner by Susanna Gregory
I keep reading cause I like Chaloner but this book felt a bit too long.

29. The World, the Flesh and the Devil by Reay Tannahill
Excellent. If you like EC's novels this is right in the same alley. One of my favs this year.

30. Emma by F.W. Kenyon
It took me ages to finish it cause I kept feeling that the author didnt like much Emma. And nor does the reader. It was fine.

31. Instruments of Darknes by Imogen Robertson
Mystery book with a sad romantic little part so little you almost miss it. It was this part which saves the book for me.

32. The Shore of Women by Pamela Sargent
How many centuries would be needed to create a entire generation of heterosexual women while keeping men "interested" so their seed can be harvested? Much food for the imagination. Great book.

33. The Whale Road by Robert Low
Now that was fun. Grown men acting like cruel kids in a very simple game.

May 2010

34. A Famine of Horses by P.F. Chisholm
A good mystery book. Not so complex as her trilogy.

35. Tyrant by Christian Cameron
Excellent. I'm looking forward to read his other books.

36. The Dead Travel Fast by Deanna Raybourn
It was fine as a romance novel. Not too scary as a vampires story.

37. A Season of Knives by P.F. Chisholm
Didnt look as interesting as the first book of the series.

38. To Defy a King by Elizabeth Chadwick
Loved this one of course. She knows how to make you love every one of her characters.

39. The Edge of Light (Dark Ages of Britain, #3) by Joan Wolf
Great end for the trilogy. Very recommended

40. Daughter of the Forest (The Sevenwaters Trilogy, #1) by Juliet Marillier
I wouldnt read this book again without a big storage of kleenex. Can a book be too moving?

41. My Name is Mary Sutter by Robin Oliveira
Scary. Did american doctors really learn their profession with a 6 months course and no practice? No wonder the big amount of dead soldiers. The romantic part took me a little by surprise.

42. In the Forests of Serre by Patricia A. McKillip
Nice old style tale. Characters a little plain.

I have The Gate to Women's Country by Sheri S. Tepper on my endless wishlist. It looks like it's based on a similar idea so I'd like to read it too. Ah, some day I'll catch up with everything I want to read... *looks at the tbr mountain and laughs*

I've read Beauty by Sheri S Tepper which I enjoyed. It included some fairytales in some way and was quite political if I remember rightly.
