The Girl Who Played with Fire by Stieg Larsson...more than halfway done.

I was going to go back to the Game of Thrones (book 2) when I was done, but my husband says TGWPWF ends in a cliffhanger and I may want to read The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest right away.

After reading Madeline Miller's romantic take on the story of Achilles and Patroclus from Homer's Iliad, I thought I'd go back and re-read Mary Renault's Fire From Heaven, some 30 years on. It seemed a natural follow-on, being the story of the childhood and youth of Alexander the Great. Alexander was profoundly influenced by the Iliad and saw in the story of Achilles and his lover/companuion Patroclus a parallel to his own relationship with his intimate friend Hephaistion. I loved this book when I first read it, but was a little disappointed to find it quite romanticized and coy, and perhaps not as good as I remembered. (I'm getting this a lot lately, and think I must learn to leave old favourites back in the warm, fuzzy past :( ). I guess it reflects the style of the times - our tastes have changed a bit over the years. The sense of time and place, and attention to atmosphere and historical detail are wonderful, but I think some of MR's later novels probably show more maturity in character development. The battle scenes are still terrific, though - the Battle of Chaeronea in particular is absolutely compelling.
