The autumn is usually my favourite season too, but this year I feel depressed at the idea of the days drawing in, etc. Rainy and windy today - seems like that's it for the British summer this year.
Anyway, scary books. What about Barbara Erskine's Midnight Is A Lonely Place - I can't read that at night, it keeps me awake. About a writer who moves to a cottage by the sea in the middle of winter and it turns out to be haunted, big time.
Or Bram Stoker, Dracula.
I liked that one of Erskine. Lots of things that go bump in the night if I recall. Dumas wrote a book of ghost stories but I've not yet got my hands on it. I think Wharton wrote some ghost stories as well, I'll have to look up the title when I'm home. It's in the big pile somewhere.

I enjoyed The Colour, it's an interesting read - it's not pacey, though. I have The Glass of Time and House of Allerbrook on my TBR pile. I've read The Meaning of Night by Michael Cox and loved it.

Glass of Time is supposed to be a sequel to The Meaning of Night, but I do believe you can read them as separate books.

Agree about the dreary British summer
Re Erskine's books - I found Midnight a good read buta bit OTT, now House of Echoes is really creepy (similar plot to Midnight) with a bit of history thrown in, also Hiding from the Light is pretty spooky - set around Halloween and all about witches and the ghost of the Witchfinder General coming after a modern-day witch.
