King Edward VIII?! Wait - wasn't this the coronation that never happened? Right - but the man who would not be king without Wallis Simpson at his side left it so late to make his decision about abdicating that several papers had already prepared commemorative issues in advance. Most of them were hastily adapted as King George VI commemorative issues, but just recently one of the Illustrated London News's Edward VIII souvenir issues was found tucked away in its original form, complete with painting showing the king that never was sitting in state, about to be crowned.

I remember that my Dad had a commerative coin for Edward VIII's coronation. When I asked him if it was worth anything, as the coronation didn't take place, he told me that probably not as thousands would have been minted.
