castle Cervena Lhota

Post by Kveto from Prague » Mon August 31st, 2009, 9:03 pm

Heres another south bohemian castle we visited recently. this one was keeping more in line with a chatau, so my oldest daughter prefered it.

This is cervena lhota, which translates as "red chatau". yes, it is red and yes, it does actually sit in the middle of a lake. its a fairy tale setting. a legend claims that a noble maiden who was locked in the castle and forbidden to marry her lover, threw herself from a window. the next day the castle was covered in red, symbolic of her blood. (although ive visited several times and think it gets a new paint job every so often. maybe another princess jumps out a window every couple of years.)

you can walk around the lake and the castle really does appear to float on the water. theres a narrow bridge and garden on the tiny island. many weddings take place here. it was closed when we arrived but im told the inside cannot compare to the outside. you can get some great mirrored refection pictures of the castle in the lake

heres an english website

Wow Keny! That is beautiful. I have never seen a castle like it. What a sad tale that goes with it though, it would make a great story.

its really different, isnt it? i wouldnt put too much credence in the legend, tho. its not in the historical records. i think a german composer once lived there. it must have been a truely inspirational setting.
