Gyrehead's 2009 releases read

Post by gyrehead » Mon April 27th, 2009, 10:28 pm

I have an odd cataloging system and so some of these were 2009 releases I read in 2008 as advance copies. However I think they fit in nicely with the theme if anyone actually uses my list as a reference point!

So for the first third of the year, here are my historical 2009 release read. Not as many as I would like. Small representation of the rest of my reading. I blame Messires Gortner and Blixt!!! ;)

Figures in Silk by Vanora Bennett
Agincourt/Azincourt by Bernard Cornwell
The Bellini Card by Jason Goodwin
The Road to Jerusalem by Jan Guillou
The Rebel Princess by Judith Cole Healey
The Devil's Queen by Jeanne Kalogridis
The Best of Men by Claire Letemendia
The Kindly Ones by Jonathan Littell
The Owl Killers by Karen Maitland
Wolf's Hall by Hilary Mantel
Stone's Fall by Iain Pears
Silent on the Moor by Deanna Raybourn
Drood by Dan Simmons
The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters
The Angel's Game by Carlos Ruiz Zafon

I can not tell you how jealous I am that you have already read The Angel's Game. Was it good?

I loved Shadow of the Wind.

I liked it very much. But it is very, very different. More of an atmospheric book and less actual action in some ways. I think Zafon is going for more what the reader thinks might be happening this time as opposed to TSOTW where the reader tries to figure out what actually happened.

Now the long wait for his next book.

...and I'm jealous of The Little Stranger! :D

The Kindly Ones sounds intriguing and very dark - it's garnered lots of heat, and accusations of "nazi porn".
