Non-HF Writing

Post by Rowan » Tue December 30th, 2008, 2:33 pm

I know that the majority - if not all - of the writers here write historical fiction, but I'm wondering if I am the only one who writes something other than historical fiction.

Am I the cheese standing alone here?

I occasionally write commercial short stories and articles for magazines. I'm not prolific but do dabble now and again.

I write sort-of fantasy, as well as straight historical. I say "sort-of" because although it's set in an invented world it doesn't contain magic or mythical beasts (except in some of the characters' beliefs), so it doesn't conform to the usual form of fantasy fiction. Ingeld's Daughter is the only one presently available, free e-book for download (http://www.carlanayland.org/ingeld/index.htm), paperback on Lulu (http://www.lulu.com/content/277039).

I also earn my living as a technical writer, if that counts.

I write summaries of legal cases for my day job (bet you can't wait to run out and read them!). I've been pondering doing some nonfiction down the line, but that's still only in the pondering stages.

I fail to see how writing YA Fantasy makes you a moron....

I do have a purpose for asking this.... of all the writing I've ever done, dream scenes seem to be the most difficult for me. In reality I have some pretty bizarre dreams and some pretty cool dreams (occasionally), but I cannot seem to translate the altered reality/bizarreness of the dream world onto paper. Any tips? :o
