I use a pen name also - it's a little changed from my real name. My first book was a memoir of my family, and I didn't want to embarrass them: they're in the phone book, and my daughter was in the military at the time. Secondly, my real name was already being used - by a classical scholar with books and articles and websites everywhere. The first time I google-searched my real name, I had to go about two hundred entries down before I found the entry which was really me. And thirdly - I want to keep things compartmentalized: there was real life, my work life, and a little community activism - and then there are my books.

That's an excellent way of describing it: compartmentalization!
