Very interesting, Ben. Robert Harris affirms in Imperium that the slaves were crucified in groups, out of sight of each other, so that the main body of prisoners would not know what was happening and become desperate. Any plausibility in that?

Maybe so, Justin. I haven't read that in any of the (many) texts that I've read, but it's not without possibility. I don't believe it happened in the case of Spartacus' men, however. I have no way of proving that, but isolating them before crucifixion isn't mentioned, nor would it have been practical to conceal the men as they were being marched along the Via Appia.
