Poll: The Debate Forum

A place to debate issues or to rant about what's on your mind. In addition to discussions about historical fiction, books, the publishing industry, and history, discussions about current political, social, and religious issues and other topics are allowed, so those who are easily offended by certain topics may want to avoid such threads. Members are expected to keep the discussions friendly and polite and to avoid personal attacks on other members. The moderators reserve the right to shut down a thread without warning if they believe it necessary.

Should debates about current political, etc. issues be allowed in this forum?

Poll: The Debate Forum

Postby boswellbaxter » Sun November 21st, 2010, 12:28 am

Some discussion has come up about the status of the debate forum. Here are the options:

1.) Do not allow debates concerning current political, religious, or social issues on this forum. Civil debates concerning historical fiction, historical controversies, the publishing industry, or similar board-related topics will continue to be allowed.

2.) Allow debates concerning current political, religious, or social issues in this forum, with the understanding that members will conduct themselves civilly and respectfully.

Voting ends November 25.

I think there should be a third option - allow political/religious etc views when it is applicable to the historic fiction issue at hand.

I'm assuming that current topics will occasionally and unavoidably come up in discussions of HF-related issues. I have no intention or desire to censor such discussions. What would be forbidden under the first option, and allowed under the second option, are debates about current topics that arise independently of HF or book-related issues.

We have a winner! 17 to 10, you voted for the debate forum to allow debates on current political, religious, and social issues. Just keep it friendly and polite, folks, and focus on the issues being debated, not the people doing the debating. No personal attacks will be allowed, and the mods reserve the discretion to shut down a thread that's turning nasty.

Huh, interesting result. Good topic title and disclaimer. Thanks, mods!

ETA: I went down the list of topics and was reminded of some of the excellent discussions we've had here. I also noticed the Suu Kyi thread and added the latest news.
