I saw an episode of the TV series just recently (saw it also when it originally aired in the 80s), looked it up and of course found out it was based on a series of books by Paul Scott. Has anyone read these books and, if so, are they good reading?
I've heard nothing but good about this, it's been on my "list" for a long time but I don't know when it will make the top of the pile.

Absolutely brilliant series set during the period of India's Independence- certainly worth making the time to read them. It's many years since I first read them- must try to fit in a re-read sometime. The TV series worked well, too.Has anyone read these books and, if so, are they good reading?
Excellent series. They take some concentration, but it's worth it.

This has been on my mental TBR for simply ages. Must get around to it. I thoroughly enjoyed the TV dramatisation.

I saw the series when it was first on TV and loved it. I bought all the books, but they are still sitting on my bookshelf!

Am an enormous fan of the miniseries - have it on DVD & watch it at least once a year. It so captures the flavor of India & although I was there a couple of times in the 1970s, I can still feel the heat & inhale the fragrant (& not-so-fragrant) smells of this fabulous country in my mind. It is a place that changes you, even on a short visit.
That being said, I found the books rather slow-going but worth reading, certainly!

I have read this historical fiction called 'The Untitled' by Gayathri Prabhu- it is fantastic- so rich and descriptiveCelia Hayes wrote: ↑Wed November 11th, 2009, 5:02 pmIt's an excellent read, very long and leisurely, with quite a number of characters - and very perceptive about that period and place. Do read it - you won't regret the time spent.
