Books about Catherine the Great

Postby diamondlil » Sat December 6th, 2008, 10:48 pm

I have heard a rumour that the author of The Madonnas of Leningrad, Debra Dean, is working on a book set in the times of Catherine the Great.

I am somewhat surprised that there isn't more around about her.

Do you mean fiction or nonfiction?

Found a few titles:
"Star of the North" by Helene Lehr
"The Naked Angel" by Stella Hershan
"Curse Not the King" by Norah Lofts
"Royal Intrigue. The Fantastic Story of Catherine the Great and Her Mad Son Paul" by Evelyn Anthony
"Bed Of An Empress" by Leopold Sacher-Masoch (about her sexual appetites, may not be a good choice though)

Some of these are a bit more then some may want to pay, but that's what I found.

SM are those fiction or NF titles.

And yes I agree there arent enough fiction books about her or Russia, for that matter!

I would be good to have a modern take on Catherine the great. There's some good NF around, but not much recent HF.

Evelyn Anthony wrote a series of novels about Catherine, called the Romanov trilogy
1) Imperial Highness ( Catherine the Great's rise to become Empress of Russia)
2) Curse Not the King (the struggle for power between Catherine the Great and her son Paul )
3) Far Flies the Eagle (the confict between Catherine the Great's grandson Czar Alexander I and Napoleon)

I'm wondering if your Norah Lofts' title is really the Evelyn Anthony one, SM

I just redid the search and it's Evelyn, not sure where I got Norah from since her name doesn't even come up on the 2nd time I searched, weird!

The publisher for Imperial Highness is curly. hmmm... I'm thinkin its not a masterpiece.

I decided to buy "Star of the North" by Helene Lehr. It was 4 bucks. I can spare that.
