Boudica

Post by enelya » Thu February 5th, 2009, 7:27 pm

Hello all

I am looking for some good historical novels centered around Boudica. I hope somebody has some tips for me, because after reading the Manda Scott novels I have become enthralled by her

Interest in HF: I love history, but it's boring in school. Historical fiction brings it alive for me.

The Eagle and the Raven by Pauline Gedge features Boudica in the beginning and latter half of the book. Much of the rest of it centers on Caradoc. I thought it was pretty good and it has recently been reissued.

Ravens of Avalon have her in it too. Though I will confess I did not enjoy the book.

Enelya, I only know of Manda's and The Eagle and the Raven (which I've only just started). But Margaret's site http://www.historicalnovels.info/ lists some others on the Ancient History page, under Roman Britain. I didn't know Anya Seton wrote a book set at that time:

"Anya Seton, The Mistletoe and the Sword (1955), historical romance/adventure about a young standard-bearer for Rome's Ninth Legion and a foster daughter of Boudica."

Funnily enough, I was thinking about doing a Boudicca book(s) just as Manda Scott did hers, and knowing hers was a big series, I shelved the idea. Maybe we need more!!

How nice. I used to have the naive idea - and I'm sure many writers on this forum would agree it's naive- that if someone else "did" a topic it was off limits. But so many of us are hovering around a limited pool of historical figures and stories that there is always overlap. Especially with the Celts, there are not many known figures or known stories (which is kind of why I made my first trilogy up, story-wise) That's probably a whole other thread, though. Margaret's page mentioned a lot of novels I did not know, so you could at last be back in Roman Britain, if not with Boudicca herself.

Not read any of these but I also found the following (some for younger readers):

Song for a Dark Queen by Rosemary Sutcliff

Warrior Queen: The Story of Boudica, Celtic Queen by Alan Gold

Imperial Governor: The Great Novel of Boudicca's Revolt by George Shipway

Queen's Brooch by Henry Treece

Boudica: A Queen of the Iceni by Joseph Roesch

To Spare The Conquered by Stephanie Plowman
Boudicca features in Simon Scarrow's Cato series.
Not in every book. Boudica is a major character in When the Eagle Hunts (Book 3 in the series). This is set just after the Claudian invasion and well before Boudica's rebellion, so she is a feisty young woman and not yet married.

Sweetpotatoboy mentioned Boudica: Queen of the Iceni by Jospeh Roesch, which I read a few years ago. If I can find my review I'll post it in the reviews section.
