Holiday Postcard Exchange?

Post by boswellbaxter » Sun November 14th, 2010, 12:31 am

As longtime members will know, for the past couple of years we had a holiday gift exchange on the forum for those who wanted to participate. I don't think we should try it this year. We had some problems last year with packages going astray and people running into difficulties that forced them to send their gifts late. Although all of the participants eventually got something, it was touch-and-go for a while, and it would have been rather expensive if I had had to buy gifts for those people who sent a gift but didn't get one in return.

So this year, I'm suggesting we try something that's much less expensive but still fun: a postcard exchange. It will work the same way as the gift exchange: send a postcard from your area to the person whose name you're assigned. The postcard could be of something historical, but doesn't have to be--it could be something offbeat, or something pretty. Ideally, though, the postcard would have some connection to your locale.

So is anyone interested? If so, is anyone willing to collect and assign names?

I like that idea a lot. I wouldn't have been able to participate in a gift exchange this year due to budget constraints.

I wasn't going to participate in the exchange this year, but I rather like this idea. I'd do international as well.

I wonder - is it possible to set up some kind of album on the site so people can actually post the cards they receive? That way we can all see the wonderful cards that are sent?

Cool idea. First thought comes to mind is to scan the card and post as an attachment, but not everyone else that ability.

Good idea! We'll set up a thread where people can tell us what cards they got and/or post scans of them.

Interest in HF: started in childhood with the classics, which, IMHO are HF even if they were contemporary when written.
Favourite HF book: Prince of Foxes, by Samuel Shellabarger
Preferred HF: Currently prefer 1600 and earlier, but I'll read anything that keeps me turning the page.

Good idea! This was done on another forum I participated on several years ago. I got a card from Australia which was very different from cards I was used to getting.

I'll have to see if there are any Christmas cards that show Vashon.

I"m down.

The gift exchange was nice, but for two years in a row there were bumps in the road. Last years bumps were frequent and large. This is way easier.
