member announcements

Post by Divia » Sun May 23rd, 2010, 8:20 pm

I dont mean to sound snarky, but I'm going to say it anyway.

I dislike the idea of newbies being able to post in "member announcements" because most of the time they are just spamming us with their books. Now, if they have a few posts under their belt (25 sounds fair) then I am fine with it.

I seem to recall the author of the Afflicted Girls posting about her novel and nothing else.

I would like to think that we support our authors here. But it bugs me when people post their spam.

Thoughts, anyone else? I've banned several people because they did nothing but promote their books on the forum after being politely asked not to, but a 25-post minimum might be a good idea.

I've seen the 25 post minimum operating on another board, and it seems to work well. I'd be in favour. :)

This sounds like a good idea and not unfair.

And it still won't stop new members 'spamming' in their introductory emails in the 'welcome' section.

See the "Note to Authors" under the new "Board Rules" area.

Interest in HF: started in childhood with the classics, which, IMHO are HF even if they were contemporary when written.
Favourite HF book: Prince of Foxes, by Samuel Shellabarger
Preferred HF: Currently prefer 1600 and earlier, but I'll read anything that keeps me turning the page.

Good idea. I must say, watching these posts has been educational. It gives me a very clear picture of how the consumer responds to book-marketing from strangers and self-promoters.

If it isn't good enough for somebody else (as in a publisher) to risk money on, or for a reader who doesn't personally know the writer to recommend it, it probably isn't worth the time, much more precious to me than the money. Note: I have stopped believing the recommendations of writers for other writers--too much pressure to be nice, too much sympathy for the fellow writer rather than the reader.

I agree. I've actually stopped reading the HF boards at Amazon and mostly for that reason. It is such a turn off, and then when you try to tell them so they get their feathers ruffled.

Same for author blurbs and/or author reviews, I just give them a big old grain of salt. Places like this and Goodreads are the best resources IMO.

Another slightly more subtle technique I've noticed here is for an author to start a thread on a subject relating to their book, which duly gets a good mention, and then disappear, rarely or never to be seen again.
