I read it when I about ten because the BBC had dramatised it (in about 12 episodes, I think) with Alan Badel, a great actor who never really quite made outside the UK. I was absolutely in love with it and demanded it as a Christmas present. My dad was quite happy to oblige because he wanted to read it too. I was one of those really fancy editions with flimsy paper covering the illustrations. It definitely wasn't abridged. I seem to remember seeing the Richard Chamberlain version much much later but it didn't quite live up to my memories of the first one. I haven't seen the Gerard Depardieu one though.

I read it years ago, in Spanish. It was my favorite Dumas: still is. I've been wanting to re-read it in English, in a good translation. Per Misfit's recommendation - our resident Dumas expert - I got the Penguin classics edition.

As for film adapations, the Jim Cavaziel /Guy Pearce version is gorgeously photographed and well written. And the scene of Cavaziel as the returned count, stepping out of a hot air balloon, is worth the price of admission.

From the author of Unmasqued comes a bold and erotic retelling of The Count of Monte Cristo.

Dantes spent years imprisoned for a crime he didn't commit. Now he's returned to Paris in the guise of the Count of Monte Cristo, seeking vengeance on those who sent him to jail. But his plan also includes a different kind of revenge on the woman he has never forgotten, the lover he has made it his mission to possess. So unfolds an erotic battle of wills in the most electrifying game of love ever played between man and woman, master and slave

I prefer the 1934 classic "The Count of Monte Cristo" staring Robert Donat supported by a great cast.......

It is indeed. My copy has the movie cover. I do own the movie on VHS, but not DVD. Perhaps a rental is in order.
Into battle we ride with Gods by our side
We are strong and not afraid to die
We have an urge to kill and our lust for blood has to be fulfilled
WE´LL FIGHT TILL THE END! And send our enemies straight to Hell!
