Liebermann Papers Series by Frank Tallis

A Death in Vienna (Liebermann Papers #1) by Frank Tallis

Any book that starts off with characters eating delicious pastries in a cafe in Vienna has a step up with me. Adding to recreating my memories of eating pastries in Vienna are two interesting protagonists: a psychiatrist who favors the budding psychoanalysis of Sigmund Freud, who makes a few appearances, and a police detective. Together, they work on solving a murder that seems implausible. Besides eating Viennese pastries and solving murders, the pair meet regularly to play music. The reader will also meet each protagonist's family and other interesting characters. Frank Tallis, who is a British clinical psychologist besides being a writer, does a great job of giving the reader the feeling of turn of the century Vienna. This is the first in a series six books. A friend recommended this series to me after my trip to Vienna in 2012. I'm sorry that I didn't start on the books sooner. Note that some of the books in the series have different titles in the UK and the USA.

I just finished the the second book in the series, Vienna Blood. I liked this one better than the first one in the series and I liked that one also! Set in one of my favorite cities, Vienna (in 1902), it's got Viennese pastries, music, murders, Viennese pastries, art, Mozart, Viennese pastries, compelling protagonists, psychoanalysis, Viennese pastries, Freemasons, atmosphere, and Viennese pastries. I want to go back to Vienna! :D
