While driving yesterday finished re-listening to an audio-book version of "Rose" by Martin Cruz Smith. This is one of the most original period crime/mystery stories I've ever come across. The locale - Wigan, Lancashire, in the 1870s and the technicalities and organisation of the coal-mining industry, as well as of the social background - is brilliantly described. The mystery is bewildering, the resolution satisfactory. A really high-class piece of work, beautifully written.

I recall enjoying that one, but it's too long ago for me to remember the specifics. I enjoy Martin Cruz Smith as a writer and he's on the DH's auto-read list.
