If you're looking for a great historical simulation game, check out Europa Universalis 3. The game spans from 1300 to the Napoleonic Wars and it's about as historically accurate as a good history book. The game play is very easy to learn. I thought that I'd share this because I recently got hooked and I can't stop playing! I'd say that it compares favorably with my other favorite games, the Civilization series, which is saying a lot.

Another good one
Another good one is Hearts of Iron II. It's a WWII simulation that is fun to play if you're into really technical games. The game play is quite a bit slower than Civ or Europa Universalis but the detail is truely remarkable. There's actually a Hearts of Iron III as well but I haven't played it yet.
