Happy Romjula! from a new member

Post by Harald » Thu December 29th, 2016, 1:23 am

(Romjula or Romjul to Norwegians is this weird week between Christmas and New Years. I’m not Norwegian but like that they have a name for this week.)

Hello All! Just discovered you. I'm a longtime reader and now writer of historical fiction. Am a fan of Michener and Follett (among others) and am writing in my own version of a “saga style.” I like historical fiction best when it answers the key question: “How did things get to be this way?” My current subject area is the birth of New York City and Manhattan in the early 17th century. Talk about a before-and-after contrast! And I have a unique personal connection to NYC, which provided my inspiration to write about it.

More to come...

Interest in HF: started in childhood with the classics, which, IMHO are HF even if they were contemporary when written.
Favourite HF book: Prince of Foxes, by Samuel Shellabarger
Preferred HF: Currently prefer 1600 and earlier, but I'll read anything that keeps me turning the page.
Location: California Bay Area

Hi Harald, and welcome! I've read quite a bit of Michener myself. Which is your favorite of his books?

Thanks for welcome! Re: Michener, I like Chesapeake, especially since it covers some of my target time frame (at the start) and location, which is close to where I currently live. I also like Mexico, primarily because of the different structure he used. Although it got mixed reviews, I’m intrigued by the fact that he put Mexico aside for 30 years before resurrecting and finishing it. There’s a companion book about how and why he did it as he did. Fascinating.

Q: Am I allowed to add what I’ve published in the member books area? Two of my series are done.

Hi Harald and welcome.

I was listening to a radio discussion about what this dreary in-between period should be called, so thank you for that word!

Hope you're enjoying Romjula!
