Hello Again.

Post by John Sliz » Tue April 12th, 2016, 7:33 pm

I feel that I have to reintroduce myself because it has been awhile since I have visited this forum. Sorry about that. I got caught up in a number of non-fiction projects and forgot about fiction. I even stopped reading fiction. Ugh! Please don't ask why. Anyhow, after reading The Martian I am back into fiction again. I know it isn't historical fiction, but at least it is fiction. Anyhow, I am happy to be back.

Interest in HF: started in childhood with the classics, which, IMHO are HF even if they were contemporary when written.
Favourite HF book: Prince of Foxes, by Samuel Shellabarger
Preferred HF: Currently prefer 1600 and earlier, but I'll read anything that keeps me turning the page.
Location: California Bay Area

I just read the Martian too--in fact my book group will be discussing it tonight--and it's a great read. Lots of lessons in it for HF writers, too, like how to take an environment that will be totally foreign to most readers and only give them the gritty details when AT THAT MOMENT they are life-and-death.
I mean, who knows or cares what hydrozine is, let alone that it can be turned into water? Well, by the time Weir got around to telling me, I did, because it meant the protagonist might actually live.
