Hello and Happy Thanksgiving!
Hello and Happy Thanksgiving!
Hello, everyone.
I'm Pasky and I am a huge fan of fiction that focuses on colonial history. For me, Paul Scott's Raj Quartet is a prime example of the form. Not only did Scott create vivid, diverse characters, but he also raises larger issues regarding the morality of colonial rule, all within a fast-moving narrative.
Inspired by Scott's work, I'm currently working on a historical novel that looks at the legacy of the U.S. occupation of the Philippines. (More info is available here.)
I also am interested in non-fiction by people like Elaine Pagels, who studies the history behind sacred text. To me, Pagels's work offers some of the pleasures of historical fiction, which is to capture concepts, ideas, and beliefs that past peoples held dearly.
I hope I hear from others who are interested in these themes.
Thanks a whole bunch!

Hi Pasky. I haven't read the Raj Quartet (yet), but have read MM Kaye and Emma Drummond (AKA as Elizabeth Darrell).

Hi Pasky. Read the Raj Quartet years ago and quite enjoyed them. I'm currently reading a US colonial period piece called The Fontiersmen by Allen Eckert who claims his fiction is actual fact and all dialog is from diaries and first person accounts. Interesting so far. Enjoy the forum and good luck with your book!
