Hello everyone

Post by Miss Moppet » Thu April 9th, 2009, 11:47 am

My love of historical fiction started with reading my mother's copies of Jean Plaidy and Georgette Heyer. A book by Plaidy (writing as Victoria Holt), The Queen's Confession, about Marie Antoinette, sparked my interest in pre-revolutionary France and led to a degree in history and an MA in art history.
I'm now a curator and lecturer, specialising in 17th and 18th century France, and am working on the second draft of a novel about the court of Louis XIV.

My five all-time favourites, in no particular order:

1. Margaret Mitchell, Gone with the Wind
2. Kathleen Winsor, Forever Amber
3. Anya Seton, Katherine
4. Sergeanne Golon, the Angelique series
5. Philippa Gregory, The Other Boleyn Girl

I have also enjoyed historicals by: Norah Lofts, Margaret George, Elizabeth Chadwick, Alison Weir, Daphne du Maurier...and no doubt many others I can't now remember! Currently reading: Annemarie Selinko, Desiree

Wishing you all a lovely day

Welcome to HFO, Miss M. Your favorites are definitely among the top ones here with most of us. Love the way you got into your career and I wish you well with your second draft.

Favourite HF book: Prince of Foxes, by Samuel Shellabarger
Preferred HF: Currently prefer 1600 and earlier, but I'll read anything that keeps me turning the page.

Welcome to the forum, Miss Moppet. Your list is echoed in many of the 'top 10 historical fiction books thread. GWTW and Katherine were on mine, too. Altho I must admit I have yet to read Forever Amber.

Oh, I envy you. As much fun as it is to re-read, there's nothing like reading a great book for the first time. I devoured the first six books one after the other. The ones I re-read most often now are Road to Versailles and Angelique in Revolt.
