Wolf Hall

Post by Jen Black » Thu January 22nd, 2015, 3:20 pm

I watched Wolf Hall last night and wondered if anyone was talking about it on here.

Some of my stories are set in the 1540s, so I loved the settings, locations and costumes as well as the acting. So interesting to see people talking by firelight, watching how the light flickers and how dim candlelight really is compared to what we have today. I tried counting how many candles were held on the three tiered candlestands and never got a total number! Must go back and freeze frame the video. Bare floorboards, and the noise every footstep makes. Tables covered in Turkey carpets. Metal drinking goblets. Lovely details.

Initially I wasn't impressed by Rylance, but he grew on me. Damien Lewis threatens to make the best Henry I've seen yet, and that includes Robert Shaw and Keith Michell's interpretations.

I saw an early trailer for "Wolf Hall" after episode 3 of "Downton Abbey" on Sunday. (It was on a Virginia PBS station) Did any other US forum members see that same trailer?
It should be interesting when it gets here to the US!

I dont remember seeing the trailer.

I have no intention of watching the mini series. I'm sorta done with Tudor stuff. I think I got tired of it after TOBG. Thats the only thing that was published and I had my fill.

I was tired of the Tudors as well until someone put the book in my hands and insisted I try it. Well....

My sis and I will be in NYC to see the RSC version of both books. We'll be seeing the tv version first; should be interesting to see the perspective of the story on the screen versus the stage.

Wow - thats quite an extensive trailer! Very cool - April cannot come too soon! (and thats the same time that the new season of Game of Thrones starts! I'll be spending more time in front of a tv that month than I have all year!)

After seeing the preview I am more convinced that this is something I can do without.

Just one more episode of WH to go here - it's way different from TOBG and The Tudors thank goodness, although The Tudors was fun in a weird, guilty pleasure way - very subtle and beautifully nuanced, maybe a bit slow for some, and it does look gorgeous (if a little dark!).

I wasn't sure about MR either at first, although I think Anton Lesser, who plays Thomas More, pretty much matches him in their scenes together. And I agree with Jen about Damien Lewis - I vaguely remember the Keith Michell version and he's always been my definitive Henry, but DL comes a pretty close second. And Claire Foy is excellent as Anne B.
