Our hero and Guy de Braose are both wearing 'armor', which I take to be plate armor. EC would have the answer for that.
Armour might have been mail - it could refer to either. However guys mostly didn't wear their armour unless a battle was imminent.
So, next question - the father the earl being dead, who decides who the two girls marry? And wouldn't the widow have to marry eventually?
Their overlord would decide i.e. the King. They would be his wards and he would sell their lordship to an interested party who would then hope to profit from their lands. Yes, the widow would have to remarry, unless she paid a hefty fine not to - which happened sometimes.
