Armour might have been mail - it could refer to either. However guys mostly didn't wear their armour unless a battle was imminent.

Their overlord would decide i.e. the King. They would be his wards and he would sell their lordship to an interested party who would then hope to profit from their lands. Yes, the widow would have to remarry, unless she paid a hefty fine not to - which happened sometimes.
