The Greek Stoic school on Rhodes

Postby parthianbow » Fri May 29th, 2009, 1:48 pm

Has anyone out there any knowledge of a good textbook which is specifically about the Greek Stoic school on Rhodes? I've had a look on Amazon and Google and come up with...not much really. I'd like to know as much about it as is known, although it seems from what I can glean, that's not much. I'd love to be proved wrong on this.
Any suggestions of texts would be gratefully received.

There are various books around which deal with the life and philosophies of Posidonius, founder of the Stoic school at Rhodes, but I believe that very little is known about the actual organisation of the school itself, though both Greeks and Romans were amongst its students. The main source of information about the school at Rhodes is Cicero, who who studied with Posidonius for a time: see "Cicero, a Study in the Origins of Republican Philosophy", by Robert T Radford, pg 19
The Cambridge Companion to the Stoicsmight be of interest - see pg 26 for mention of the school at Rhodes
(Though I feel sure that I'm not telling you anything you don't already know!)

Thanks for that - I'd seen one of those references but not the other. Still almost no information on the school itself. I guess I'll just have to make it up, using what we know about other schools.
