How Many Dukes?

Post by Ikon » Wed February 4th, 2009, 1:19 am

During the reign of Edward IV of England, how many dukes were there in all? I have counted Clarence, Buckingham, York, Gloucester and (maybe) Cornwall. Were there more and, if so, who? Thank you for your help.

The Duke of Suffolk, Edward IV's brother-in-law (married to his sister Elizabeth).

The Duke of Exeter, another brother-in-law of Edward IV (married to his sister Anne, though their marriage was annuled in the 1470's).

Two Dukes of Norfolk, both named John Mowbray, father and son. The father died very early in the reign.

The Duke of Bedford, George Neville, nephew to Warwick the Kingmaker (stripped of his title in the 1470's after he had been stripped of his inheritance a few years before).

The Duke of Cornwall was one of the titles held by Edward IV's son, the Prince of Wales.

Reason: Wrote "Sussex" for "Suffolk." Duh.

I should have written "Suffolk" instead of "Sussex." My post has been corrected.

There was also Henry Beaufort, Duke of Somerset, executed in 1464. His younger brother, Edmund, styled himself as duke also after Henry's death.
