Fascinating TV programme re. ancient Nubia

Post by parthianbow » Wed January 6th, 2010, 10:30 am

This is on BBC i-player, and is the first part of a four part mini series. I'd read a National Geographic article about the black Pharoahs before, but this programme fills in a lot more detail, and shows the amazing sites of Meroe and Kerma, among others, in their impressive glory.
Highly recommended. Tonight the episode is about a woman Pharoah who took to the seas...ideas, Michelle?

Recommendation seconded! I watched the programme on broadcast last night. Really interesting.

The female Pharoah I can think of is Hatshepsut, and from the little I know about her she sounds like the sort of lady who might well have conquered an overseas territory. I look forward to finding out more tonight.

Brilliant - thanks for the link Ben. :) Basil Davidson did a fascinating series on African history in the '60s and I don't think there's been much since...I know the old man is going to be fascinated by this one.

I caught the last half hour of this in the early hours - excellent I thought. I will watch the next in the series.

I remeber that "National Geographic" article, Ben! It was fascinating. If anyone wants to read it, it's still available here:

Thanks for the recommendation- will check it out.

That looks very interesting.

Hatshepsut didn't actually do any conquering. There was a trade mission to the land of Punt though.

You're right, it was a trade mission. The programme title was something like 'The Pharoah who conquered the sea', which confused me. The programme followed a team reconstructing the sort of ship that would have made the journey and learning how to sail it on the Red Sea. Really interesting. It's on the iPlayer for the next 12 days: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0 ... d_the_Sea/

The Hatshepsut programme was great, wasn't it?! Seeing those piles of 4,000 year old rope that they discovered on the former coastline was amazing.
It wasn't part of the series I mentioned, though, just another great programme on BBC4. The second part of the series about lost African kingdoms is on next Tuesday at 9 pm GMT, and thereafter on iPlayer. No doubt it will be as good as the Nubian one.
Carla - thanks for the heads up on Hatshepsut's identity.
Annis - thanks for the link!

Just caught up with the Nubia episode on the iplayer. Fascinating stuff - though had to laugh at how keen Gus Casley-Heyford was to get his shirt off for the Nubian wresting :D
