Interest in HF: started in childhood with the classics, which, IMHO are HF even if they were contemporary when written.
Favourite HF book: Prince of Foxes, by Samuel Shellabarger
Preferred HF: Currently prefer 1600 and earlier, but I'll read anything that keeps me turning the page.
Location: California Bay Area

Wow. Jaw-dropped. that's why I check this forum for my reads, and ignore Amazon reviews. Except the one-star reviews. I always read those. sometimes you can tell most about a book by who hates it.

I will still read Amazon reviews, as there are a couple of reviewers I've come across over the years that read a lot of HF and review honestly - but - I am aware of the fiverr and similar outlets selling reviews. Fiverr has options to add an extra, say $5, to the review and thus gets them by the Verified Purchase thing on Amazon.

Wow, that is really really crap that people can do that on Amazon. I knew about fake reviews and books made up of Wikipedia articles before, but this whole thing is just... wow. And really not encouraging for the real self-published authors out there.

I had no idea this was going on! Yikes. It makes me sad. what is worse is that Amazon probably doesnt care.

Who knows? I do know that at least one fiverr reviewer had a comment on her Amazon profile that she reviewed for fiverr = she's getting paid for reviews. It was reported to Amazon by at least one person (me), but she's still reviewing, although she has changed her tune a bit. Changed her profile name and pic, and does disclose on non book review items. Lol, going back through some of her older reviews is hilarious. She's ready for retirement, she's ready to go to a frat house (ummmm, she?), she's young and has kids, you name it.

If you look around fiverr a bit, you'll see how they've managed to wiggle around the verified purchase badge.

This is part of why I'm cautious about self published books, and why I don't pay much attention to awards and quotes. I don't know how much fake/plagiarized books are an issue in the historical fiction genre, but certainly fake reviews and award claims are.

Also, this is interesting - it doesn't show on the archive link but since this was posted they have added this to their article:
Dear reader,
After this post was published it has come to our attention that the book we used, “Untamed Billionaire, Undressed Virgin” has been under copyright since 2008 and not, in fact, in the public domain. The offending website where we found the full text pirated the book illegally and, as everyone knows, two wrongs don’t make a right so we are also at fault.

We’d like to apologize to the book’s author, Ms. Cleary, and her publisher for our error in judgment. Her book is available on Amazon if you’re looking for a romantic jaunt. We really did enjoy her work and wholeheartedly recommend it to interested readers.

Additionally, commenting on this post has been disabled because the unfortunate copyright infringement detracted from our original intention. This isn’t meant to be a solution to the problem, just a knee-jerk reaction to a situation we created. We’re sorry to all that have been offended by the lapse in judgment.

Onwards,
The Hustle
