Change the locks, pronto. Get a locksmith to advise you on something that is going to be secure. And store the keys somewhere that you will remember, but that can't be seen from anywhere else. Do it NOW; otherwise I would imagine it is going to be hard to sleep. It is very disturbing that someone was obviously prowling around your home.
I have French doors to a garden, but, living in NY, I also have a heavy iron grate that is pulled across and kept locked with a key that I keep in a drawer. (I know from being broken into in the middle of hte night in London that if someone can see a key from a window or door, they can/will try to get hold of it -- using sticky tape at the end of a broom handle or something.)
Be safe...

Not as important as Marge's but still frustrating...

Have located a hard to find DVD that could be very helpful in research for a new project. Found one in the US. But they'll only ship it to the UK.

LoveHistory, if you want to send it to me, I'll mail it onward. Will you be able to watch it though? Remember that there are different DVD zones... If that part of it is OK, and you would like to take me up on this, just shoot me a PM.

Several hours and $600 later every single lock that can be changed in my house has now been changed. I thought I would take the opportunity to get everything rekeyed and he could do everything but two doors. They will have to be replaced eventually but it will have to wait for another day.

Great news re keys... I know it's a hassle and an expense, but given the risks?? The most important thing is your safety and the best way to achieve that is to make your place appear more impenetrable than that of anyone else on your block. I realize that sounds cynical, but....
May tomorrow's best thing be that you now feel comfortable, relaxed and that you're sleeping well.

Marg, hope you are doing better - glad to hear you had those locks changed!

Hopefully this will discourage your prowler from coming back. Stay safe.

My mil was burgled whilst she was on holiday - they stole some jewellery and her handbags which she kept on top of her wardrobe. The police spoke to her on the phone and told her they were very sorry but the burglars had made quite a mess of her house! Trouble is, they hadn't made the mess - my mil does car boot sales and collects loads of stuff for them and she stores it all over her house which ends up looking like a bit of a junk yard!! LOL. She didn't dare admit to it! Anyway, she did have an alarm installed after that and although it wasn't funny at the time, looking back it's quite amusing.

Glad you've had your locks changed so quickly, Marg, and hopefully you are feeling more secure.

More annoying then "worst":
I had my top 6 books on my queue arranged exactly as I wanted them to be shipped and since I removed all the "High's" so they'd have to send me the "Medium" level books. But instead of the 4 books from the top of the queue, they put only 1 "Medium" and chose 3 currently "Low" books from further down and also books that were further down were moved up higher where I didn't want them. Very annoying!
