Amazon and False Book Page Totals

Post by SonjaMarie » Thu January 27th, 2011, 8:14 pm

Again Amazon states a total for a book and the actual total is either higher or lower.

Two examples of recent books I've gotten:
"Strangers" by Mary Anna Evans, Amazon gives the page total as 250. When I got it the actual total was 305pgs and then more pages of questions for the author.

Today I received "King Rufus: The Life and Mysterious Death of William II of England" by Emma Mason. Amazon gives the page total as 336. But even with all the notes and biographies and index it only comes out to 287.

I was also looking at a book about Egyptian stuff at the British Museum - "Eternal Egypt: Masterworks of Ancient Art from the British Museum" by Edna R. Russmann ed. Amazon gives the page total as 400, but if you use the "look inside" option the index starts on 285 and unless there's 115 pages of index or other stuff, it's way off.

This is getting very annoying!

I rarely look at the page count so I've never had this problem. I could see how it would be annoying though.

I come across incorrect page counts often, Helen Hollick's Hollow Crown a prime example. IIRC it says 400 some pages but it's actually 800 pages. Some might be tied in with the seller who listed the book and it's darn near impossibly to get Amazon to fix it. Goodreads is another good place to check, and much easier to get things corrected. Just ask a librarian and like magic...

The reason why it's annoying me is that I often buy a book based on it's length, if I need a semi short book, like 200 or so pages or if I need a longer book. Or if I'm going to spend more money on a book that's supposed to be long, if it's not that long it's going to make me really annoyed!

Now I do searches on Google Books to see what it says the length is or use Look Inside if it's available.

It is best to check around if page count is important. Once something is *up* at Amazon you'll rarely get it fixed. Try to tell them x and x and x and x are all the same damn book and should be combined is next to impossible :(

Sigh, and it only seems to be happening in the last year or so, I don't recall having this problem in the past. I wonder why?

Yeah this happens a lot, but it seems to happen more with NF than fiction with me. I wonder if its because Amazon gets information before the book is published and perhaps it went through another edit before print?
