LA Renn Fest

Post by Rowan » Fri December 4th, 2009, 6:14 pm

Well I'm excited to say that I'm finally going to my first Renaissance Festival tomorrow. :D It's about 45 minutes from where I live and from the photos I've seen on their website, it should be loads of fun. I will take photos, of course, but I'm most excited about the raptor aviary. :D :D :D I think they are so noble and majestic.

I've never had a keen interest in attending a Renaissance festival in the past, but since I've been reading historical fiction, I find myself being more interested in a wider variety of historical events. I remember when I was young, there was a Renaissance festival in the park near our house, but they quit doing it years ago. :( Still, this one is close enough, so I'm going! :D

Interest in HF: started in childhood with the classics, which, IMHO are HF even if they were contemporary when written.
Favourite HF book: Prince of Foxes, by Samuel Shellabarger
Preferred HF: Currently prefer 1600 and earlier, but I'll read anything that keeps me turning the page.

Very cool! I looked at the website, it looks like they have al the bells and whistles.
There is one faire in Northern California that still runs like this -- a whole month and season passes. But a strange thing happened about fifteen years ago when that Faire lost their location and had to scale down for a few years (it is now up and running in another place): all these little, one-weekend faires sprang up and prospered. There are 28 of them now at my last count, so almost any month you can go to a faire if you feel like it.

Don't forget your camera -- and lots of space on the film or digital chip. Ren faires can be loads of fun, but don't forget to pace yourself, as there can be a lot to see and take in all at once.

Well we went despite the cold weather (my friend is from India and not keen on temps below 70) and we had a blast. We circled through the whole village twice and it took us maybe 4 hours? It was so great. I'm sorry I'd never attended one before this year. I look forward to next year's. It may be a few days before I can share any photos as my laptop is out of commission at the moment and I got rid of my external SD card reader when I bought it because it's got a built-in reader. When I fix the computer then I will get the photos off the camera and share one or two with everyone.
