Remembering Kristallnacht

Post by annis » Sun November 9th, 2008, 8:36 am

Tonight is the 70th anniversary of Kristallnacht, the Night of the Broken Glass, so named for the broken glass carpeting the streets of Nazi Germany after an organised frenzy of destruction which marked the first major move towards Hitler's Final Solution.

In a single night more than 200 synagogues were destroyed and thousands of Jewish businesses and homes ransacked. 92 Jews were murdered and 25,000–30,000 were arrested and deported to concentration camps.
It's a chilling reminder of where unchecked prejudice can lead.

Preparations are under way to mark the anniversary in Germany.

Thanks for the heads up, Annis.
A project called MEMO 38 has done a 3-D computer recreation of the Weisbaden synangogue, destroyed during Kristallnacht. They are going to display it today in Jerusalem. Here is an article in Hebrew, but look at the pics.

Ona related note, the blueprints for Auschwitz were recently discovered.

It must have been a magnificent building. Out of curiousity, where were the Auschwitz blueprints found?

In a Berlin apartment. How they got there, I don't know.
Here is the original article in the BILD but I don't know German.

The father of the genealogist who helped me with research for my HF committed suicide in Westphalia after Krystallnacht, and after the war the community named an elementary school for him.

Her mother fled with her to Rotterdam where they survived WWII with the help of Christian neighbors.

Interesting, Volgadon.

Here's an article about the plans in English.

Thanks, Volgadon and Michelle. This is significant, because it shows that the processes for eliminating detainees were part of the camp's original remit. Holocaust deniers have always said there was no proof that the camp was set up with that purpose, and will now have to rethink their argument.

Oh, I can hear the arguments about authenticity rearing their ugly heads.

In the horribly fascinating category, here are some images of the plans which were discovered.

Thanks for the reminder, Annis. It is amazing how we keep finding out more about the Holocaust decades after the gruesome facts.
